The work
Laundries get used hard. The room runs water and detergent, holds wet clothes, deals with humidity, stores cleaning supplies, and on a coastal block often handles the sandy clothes coming back from the beach. It earns the title of the most worked room in the house, and it shows up in how quickly it deteriorates if the original build wasn’t right.
We do laundries at every scale: walk-in laundry rebuilds, full strip-outs with new cabinetry and tiling, european-style integrated laundries in cupboards or behind doors, and laundry/mudroom combinations that handle the realities of coastal living.
Built to be used
The things that matter in a laundry are the things that matter in any wet area, but they get tested harder. Waterproofing under and behind the washing machine. Ventilation to manage the humidity from the dryer. Plumbing that’s set up for hot, cold and washing machine connections cleanly. Storage that actually fits what gets stored there.
Surfaces need to handle water, detergent, and abrasion. Cabinetry needs to be sealed at the edges where water gets in. The flooring needs to drain, or at least not stain. The choices here are practical: what holds up, what cleans, what doesn’t trap dirt.
Cheaper laundry renovations fail in predictable places. We’ve replaced enough of them to know where to spend and where to save.
Laundries as part of a larger renovation
Most laundry renovations are part of a bigger project: a kitchen renovation that opens up the floor plan, a bathroom renovation that triggers replumbing, a whole-home renovation that touches everything. When that’s the case, doing the laundry at the same time usually makes sense. The trades are on site, the services are exposed, and the cost per square metre drops sharply.
